Common Symptoms & Warning Signs
If you notice any of these structural failure signs in your Playa Vista garage, contact our master technicians immediately:
⚠️
Cables Jumping Out of Drum Grooves
Damaged drum ridges allow the lifting cable to slip into adjacent channels or wrap around the shaft.
⚠️
Cracked or Fractured Cast Aluminum
Excessive torque or cable shock fractures the aluminum drum casing around the set screws.
⚠️
Loose Set Screws Slipping on Torsion Bar
The drum slips out of synchronization, causing one side of the door to hang lower than the other.
⚠️
Metal Burrs Scoring Cable Strands
Sharp metal burrs inside the spiral cable grooves that fray and slice high-tensile steel cables.
Technical Specifications & Commercial Standards
We never install fragile builder-grade parts. Every service call utilizes heavy-duty components rated for decades of use:
⚙️
High-Strength Die-Cast Aluminum Construction
Precision-machined standard lift drums (400-8, 400-12, or 5250) engineered for maximum cable retention.
⚙️
Dual Hardened Square-Head Set Screws
Two case-hardened steel set screws torqued securely into the torsion shaft to prevent slippage.
⚙️
Calibrated Cable Groove Geometry
Smooth spiral cable channels that prevent cable overlap, bird-caging, and friction heat.
⚙️
High-Lift & Vertical-Lift Drum Options
Specialized tapered drums engineered for high-lift, vertical-lift, and commercial door applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (Playa Vista, CA)
Straightforward answers regarding Overhead Door Cable Drum Replacement costs, emergency response times, and warranties:
What causes a cable drum to slip or fail?
Drums fail primarily from loose set screws, metal fatigue from thousands of cycles, or sudden shock loads when a spring snaps.
Can cable drums be adjusted while springs are wound?
Never! Cable drums are under direct torsion spring tension. Attempting to loosen set screws without unwinding springs can cause severe injury.
How do I know what size cable drum my door requires?
Drum sizing depends on door height, weight, and track lift type (standard lift, high lift, or vertical lift). Our techs verify drum specs on-site.
Do you replace both drums when one is damaged?
Yes, we always replace drums in matched pairs to ensure identical cable spool circumference and perfectly level travel.
Why should both lifting cables be replaced if only one frayed or snapped?
Both cables carry identical tensile loads and travel cycles. When one fails, the companion cable absorbs double the stress and has reached the same fatigue threshold. Replacing them as a synchronized pair ensures level travel and long-term safety.
